Air leaks can have a major impact on your home’s energy efficiency. Drafts and breezes from the outside cause your heating and cooling system to work harder. Not only does this eat up more energy, but it also raises your energy bills and put undue stress on your HVAC system. A drafty home is also uncomfortable to live in because leaks can create cold or hot spots in certain rooms.

Luckily, our technicians here at Dave Broussard A/C & Heating are experts at detecting air leaks. Take a look at these three simple ways to detect air leaks in your home.

1. With Your Hand

Most of the time, finding an air leak doesn’t require any fancy equipment. In fact, large leaks can be detected using just your hand! Air leaks are most likely to pop up near the seams of external-facing doors and windows. If you feel a draft or a big difference in temperature in those spots, then you have an air leak.

2. With a Candle

A candle can help you find air leaks smaller than what you can feel with just your hand. Simply light the candle and (carefully) pass it near the seams of your doors and windows. When the candle flame flickers or blows out, you’ve found the source of the air leak.

3. With a Stick of Incense

Smaller leaks can be found using a lit stick of incense. To make this trick work, you first have to depressurize your home by turning off your HVAC and any ceiling fans. Once that’s done, simply light the incense and pass it near areas where you suspect of having an air leak. If the smoke gets sucked out or blown inward, you have a leak in that spot.
